Facelift 2013

Facelift was first conceived in 2010 when the Boon Lay CC Youth Executive Committee (YEC) noticed the unkempt and often dismal state of certain households in the neighbourhood. As the name suggests, the initiative aims to brighten up the lives of needy families by having youth volunteers spruce up their living environment just before Chinese New Year, providing a fresh coat of paint and spring cleaning.

Facelift 2013, with the motto of “Lifting Lives”, saw the participation of 250 volunteers hailing from various organisations such as Raffles Institution’s The Youth Club @ Boon Lay, River Valley High School’s Choir, Singapore Polytechnic, Tanglin Trust School, Rotary Club Sentosa and many more.
This was the fourth-installment of Facelift, and the first ever that involved the collaboration between the YEC and The Youth Club @ Boon Lay (BLYC). The organising committee from BLYC comprised 5 members who played a crucial role in the success of this year’s event. First came the conducting of several needs analyses to thoroughly assess the requirements of needy households. The analyses revealed a need for Facelift to expand its scope, hence the provision of other services such as the installation of energy-saving light bulbs, grab bars and even the donation of furniture to deserving households.

With some guidance, the organising committee had to deal with the onerous task of liaising with many sponsors (e.g. Merchant’s Association of Boon Lay) and stakeholders (e.g. seeking volunteers from ITE). Logistical purchases involved on-the-ground work, as our dedicated members struggled to make optimal purchases while considering the project’s budget. Right down to the last day before Facelift 2013, administrative work (e.g. organising the volunteers into groups) was constantly undertaken to ensure the progress of Facelift’s preparation.  

While it has been an arduous journey, BLYC’s organising committee has undeniably embarked on an enriching experience. Indeed, from the initial conception process to witnessing the materialisation of months of tireless planning, it is heartening to see that Facelift 2013 has gone beyond making just a physical difference in transforming the lives of Boon Lay’s community.
